UMW Baseball Sweeps Saturday Pair From St. Mary's

The University of Mary Washington baseball team swept a pair of games from visiting St. Mary's College on Saturday at Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 3-9 on the season, and 2-4 in Coast 2 Coast Athletic Conference action. Game scores were 10-7 and 11-10.

In the first game, St. Mary's jumped ahead with two runs in the first and another in the third. UMW responded with four in the bottom of the third, as Caleb McAlister led off with a double, advanced to third on a fly ball, and scored on a Garrett Lyons single. Lyons stole second and third before scoring on a Nick Ciuffreda single. Norman Holcomb followed with a single to move Ciuffreda to third, and stole second. Both runners scored on a David Lambertson single.

St. Mary's tied the score in the fourth, but the Eagles posted six runs in the fifth. A walk and two hit by pitches loaded the bases, setting up Jonathan Sedmak for an RBI single. Lyons walked to reload the bases, and after a pitching change, Ciuffreda walked to plate another run. Two more runs then scored on a wild pitch.

The Seahawks scored one in the sixth and two in the eighth, but the Eagles held on for the 10-7 win. Lambertson had three hits and two RBI, while Ciuffreda added two hits and a walk. Holcomb posted one hit and two walks.

Zach Adams gained the win with seven innings of five-run, 10-hit ball, with one strikeout and three walks. Ryan Dudak pickd up the save with 1.2 innings onf one-hit relief.

The second game saw the Eagles race ahead with a six-run first inning. Ciuffreda plated two runs with a double, and Holcomb followed with an RBI double. Lambertson singled to plate Ciuffreda, and Luke Guerzon added an RBI single.

The Seahawks scored twice in the second and third innings, before the Eagles added another in the bottom of the third on an error. The Seahawks score twice more in the fifth to draw to within 7-6, but the Eagles scored solo runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth to extend the lead to 10-6. St. Mary's scored four in the ninth to knot the score at 10-10, but the Eagles won in walkoff fashion as Lyons' fielder's choice couldn't be played into an inning-ending double play.

Lambertson led the Eagles with three hits, while Owen Reilly singled and doubled. Ty Lowe and McAlister each had a pair of hits.
