UMW Baseball Tops Marymount, 18-3, in CAC Tournament on Friday

The University of Mary Washington continued its run in the Capital Athletic Conference Tournament on Friday with an 18-3 victory over Marymount University. The Eagles will next play Wesley College in another elimination game at 4 p.m.

The Eagles started with a run in the first after Marymount scored in the top of the frame, as Brian Burns struck out swinging but reached on a passed ball, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on another wild pitch.

The Saints scored one in the third, but the Eagles answered again, as three straight batters were hit by pitches, and Tyler Truslow scored on a double play. UMW forged ahead with three runs in the fourth, as Stephen Johnston singled and scored on a triple by Kyle Bynum. Ramsis Ruiz followed with a sacrifice fly. Mark Smith doubled and scored on a Burns single.

The Eagles added five runs in the fifth. David Slupek singled ahead of a Johnston home run, and Bynum singled before Ruiz and Smith were hit by pitches. Bynum scored on a wild pitch, and Smith and Ruiz scored on an error.

Marymount scored once in the seventh, but UMW answered with four. Smith doubled and scored on a Truslow single. Thomas Weaver connected for a two-run homer, and Bynum added an RBI single.

In the eighth, Smith was hit by a pitch and Bryce Runey and Burns followed with RBI doubles. Christian Hague had a two-run double and Slupek added with an RBI single.

Bynum led the Eagles with three hits, while five players added two. Nick McIntyre gained the win with five innings of one run relief.
