The University of Mary Washington baseball team used the strength of a seven-run sixth inning to defeat Southern Virginia University, 11-6, on Wednesday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium in Capital Athletic Conference play. The Eagles improve to 10-9 overall, and 3-4 in league action.

The Eagles jumped ahead in the first, as Brian Burns singled, stole second, and moved to third on a bunt single from Reed Farrier. Stephen Johnston followed with a sacrifice fly to put UMW on top.

In the second, the Eagles added three runs, as Ramsis Ruiz hit a one-out triple, and scored on a Bryce Runey single. Burns followed with another triple, and would score on a wild pitch.

The Knights scored once in the fourth to cut the margin to 4-1, but the Eagles exploded for seven runs on six hits and a pair of errors in the sixth to bust the game open. Christian Hague reached on an error, and moved to second on a bunt from Ruiz. After Runey walked, Burns drove home a pair of runs with a single, and Farrier doubled home Burns.

Johnston followed with an RBI single, and Thomas Weaver would knock home two more runs with a double. Hague followed with an RBI single to cap the scoring in the frame.

The Knights scored once in the seventh, twice in the eighth, and twice in the ninth, but it wasn't enough, as the Eagles recorded the five-run win.

Burns had three hits, three runs scored, and three RBI to lead the Eagle offense, while Farrier, Johnston, and Runey each had two hits. Sophomore Hank Biggs gained the win with one inning of relief, allowing no hits or walks with one strikeout. All six Knight runs were unearned.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they visit Marymount University for a noon doubleheader played at Bishop O'Connell High School.
