Keller, Johnston, Moynihan Named to VaSID All-State College Division Baseball Team

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State Baseball teams were announced on Friday, led by an impressive contingent from two of the Commonwealth's top programs in 2016. After rising to as high as No. 2 in the nation this season, Randolph-Macon College led the way with three of the four major honors including Pitcher, Player and Coach of the Year in the state, while fellow Old Dominion Athletic Conference program Shenandoah University matched the Yellow Jackets with five total All-State honorees.

A pair of seniors headlined the finest season in Randolph-Macon baseball history, as VaSID Player of the Year Travis Lodge and Pitcher of the Year James Walsh each earned first team All-American honors. The VaSID Coach of the Year, Ray Hedrick, helped lead the Yellow Jackets to the program's first ever NCAA Regional Championship Game and a program record 35 wins. Rounding out the 2016 major awards was Southern Virginia University freshman Marcus Begg, collecting VaSID Rookie of the Year honors.

Lodge exploded in his final year with the Yellow Jackets, dominating opposing pitching to the tune of a .426 batting average and .818 slugging percentage. One of the top hitters in the nation, he was named the South Region Player of the Year while collecting first team All-Conference, All-Region, and All-America laurels. He set program records with 13 home runs and 51 RBI while registering 63 hits, 41 runs scored, and an on-base percentage of .535.

Walsh had an equally dominant season for R-MC on the mound, earning ODAC Pitcher of the Year and D3baseball.com South Region Pitcher of the Year honors. The senior was 10-0 in 14 starts this year with a 1.98 ERA after working 95.1 innings. He broke program marks for innings pitched, wins and starts, while ranking second in program lore with 102 strikeouts. Like Lodge, he also collected first team All-Conference, All-Region and All-American honors.

Southern Virginia University earned its first ever VaSID Rookie of the Year honor after Begg put together an award-winning season for the Knights. Begg earned the Capital Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year designation after leading SVU in most offensive categories and ranking fourth in the league with a .403 batting average. He drove in 33 with 23 runs scored, including six home runs.

Rounding out the 2016 major awards is Hedrick, picking up his second career VaSID Coach of the Year honor. In his 12th season as head coach, the R-MC guide led his squad to the most impressive season in program history, including the team's first ever NCAA Tournament victory. The Yellow Jackets won three postseason games, and reached the Mideast Regional Championship before falling in a one-run game to top-seeded La Roche. Randolph-Macon posted a 35-8-1 overall record, finishing the year ranked as high as 7th nationally after climbing to 2ndduring the year.

After another impressive year of baseball, two teams at the College Division level separated from the rest to lead the way on the 2016 Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) All-State Teams.  Fifteen different schools were represented, led by five selections each for Randolph-Macon College and Shenandoah University. The Hornets had the most first team honors, with four, while the Yellow Jackets boasted three of the four major honors.
