Five UMW Baseball Players Named to 2016 All-CAC Team

YORK, Pa. - Capital Athletic Conference tournament finalists Salisbury and Frostburg State each secured six spots on the 2016 All-CAC Baseball team, headlined by Player of the Year honors for Salisbury's Tom LaBriola.

LaBriola, a junior catcher for the Sea Gulls, becomes the sixth Salisbury player to earn Player of the Year honors and first since 2009. He was also a first-team selection for the first time in his career, leading a group of five Sea Gulls on the All-CAC first team. Other first-team honorees included junior shortstop Pete Grasso, a repeat pick, along with senior first baseman Jake Dmiterchik, senior outfielder Kyle Goodwin, and sophomore designated hitter Brad Keith. Freshman starting pitcher Ian Scheidemann rounded out the SU all-stars as a second-team selection and one of three freshmen on the all-star squad.

Frostburg State landed six players on the all-conference team, including four first-teamers. Sophomore Greg Schneider was the lone repeat selection, earning first-team honors as a starting pitcher. In 2015, Schneider was the CAC Rookie of the Year and a second-team all-star. Joining Schneider on the first team were senior reliever Nick Huff, senior second baseman K.J. Hockaday, and junior outfielder Devin Bell. Senior first baseman Connor Cooper and junior outfielder Brad Garrant were named to the second team.

Marymount head coach Frank Leoni was tabbed by his peers as the 2016 CAC Coach of the Year. Leoni, who led the Saints to a second-place regular season finish and their first-ever CAC postseason victory, earned the award for the first time. A pair of sophomore starting pitchers for the Saints made their way onto the all-conference team for the first time. Collin Bazemore was named to the first team, while Dylan Gerdts was tabbed as a second-team pick.

The other 2016 major award went to Southern Virginia freshman Marcus Begg, who was named Rookie of the Year. Begg, a third baseman, also represented the Knights on the All-CAC first team. He is the first-ever Southern Virginia player to earn Rookie of the Year honors.

Mary Washington received five all-conference nods, each on the second team. Senior starting pitcher Ryan Van Assche, senior catcher James Keller, and senior Mitch Moynihan earned their second-straight all-star nods, while junior reliever Erik Jorgensen and junior third baseman Thomas Weaver received their first career all-conference recognition.

Christopher Newport, Penn State Harrisburg, and Wesley each notched two spots on the all-conference team.

CNU senior outfielder Tommy Vitaletti was named to the first team for the second time after also claiming first-team honors in 2014. Junior second baseman Keith Roberts claimed second-team accolades for the Captains.

A pair of Penn State Harrisburg pitchers earned All-CAC honors. Sophomore starter Mark Artley was a first-team selection, while freshman reliever Brendan Riotto nabbed second-team recognition.

Wesley junior outfielder Trevor Mears and senior shortstop Eric Speidel were honored as second-team selections. It marks the second all-conference nod for Mears, who was a second-team pick in 2014 and Rookie of the Year in 2013.
