The 12th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped its Capital Athletic Conference opener to visiting Southern Virginia University, 7-6, on Wednesday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles slip to 13-3 overall.

The Knights used two big innings and held on, as the Eagle comeback fell just short. Southern Virginia scored three runs in the first, with two hits, a fielder's choice, an RBI ground out and a single.

In the second, the Eagles got one run back, as Nykolai Ellis was hit by a pitch and went to second on Tim Perry's walk. After a Cody Beacorn sacrifice, an RBI groundout by Bynum put UMW on the board.

The Eagles took the lead in the third with three runs. Mitch Moynihan led off with a walk, and advanced to third on a David Slupek single. James Sink followed with an RBI double, and he and Slupek scored on sacrifice flys from Ellis and Perry.

Southern Virginia plated four runs in the fourth. The Knights gained four hits and were aided by an error and a bases loaded walk.

The Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the ninth, as Slupek singled and Sink doubled. Ellis followed with an RBI single, and Sink scored on a groundout. UMW left the tying run at third as the game ended with a groundout on a bang-bang play at first.

Sink led the Eagles with a pair of doubles, and Slupek added a pair of singles. Ellis drove in two.

Senior Tyler Daig took the loss, allowing one earned run on four hits in the fourth. Paul McClure, Hank Biggs, and Erik Jorgensen combined for 5.1 innings of three-hit scoreless relief.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Marymount for a CAC doubleheader with Marymount University at noon.
