The University of Mary Washington baseball team improved to 7-0 on the season with a 6-5 win at Christopher Newport University on Thursday. Junior Ryan Van Assche allowed one earned run in seven innings in picking up his third win.

CNU broke through first with a run in the fourth, but UMW plated five runs in the sixth. Kyle Bynum led off being hit by a pitch, and Justin Kime reached on an error, before Jono Haught drove home Bynum with an RBI double. After a wild pitch and a walk, James Keller reached on an error to plate Haught, and David Slupek drove home Mitch Moynihan with an RBI single. Thomas Weaver followed with a two-run double.

In the top of the ninth, the Eagles scored what proved to be the game-winning run, as Keller walked with the bases loaded. The Captains rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning, but Tyler Daig picked up the save with the tying run on third.

Slupek led the Eagles with a single, double, run scored and RBI, while Haught doubled and walked twice. Van Assche threw seven innings, allowing six hits and two walks, striking out seven and allowing one earned run. Nick McIntyre threw a scoreless eighth, and David Phillips and Daig each got an out to end the contest.
