UMW Baseball Drops Twinbill at #7 Salisbury in CAC Pair on Saturday

The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 12-0 decision at #7 Salisbury University on Saturday afternoon in game one of their Capital Athletic Conference doubleheader, and then fell in the nightcap, 7-6. The Eagles fall to 11-5 overall, and 2-3 in CAC play.

The Sea Gulls jumped ahead in game one with four runs in the first, and added single runs in the seocnd and third. The Gulls added four in the seventh and two in the eighth.

Mary Washington had three hits in the contest, with James Sink hitting a double, and Brian Burns and James Keller adding singles.

Freshman Paul McClure took the loss for the Eagles, allowing eight earned runs in seven innings, falling victim to four Eagle errors. McClure walked four and struck out two. Erik Jorgensen pitched a two-hit eighth in relief.

The second game saw the eagles jump ahead with a pair of runs in the first. After a pair of singles from Brian Burns and Tyler Truslow, Jono Haught hit a sacrifice fly to plate Burns, and after a double by James Keller, Nolan Gilbert reached on an error to plate Truslow.

Salisbury answered with two runs in the first, but UMW went ahead with three runs in the fifth. Keller and James Sink singled, and Nolan Gilbert followed with an RBI single. After Sink scored on a wild pitch, Alex Bryant plated Gilbert with a sacrifice fly.

The Sea Gulls scored once in the fifth and three times in the sixth to gain the lead at 6-5. The eagles tied the game in the eighth as Sink singled to shortstop to plate Burns, but Salisbury found the game winner in the bottom of the ninth.

Sink led UMW with three hits, while Burns, Truslow, and Keller each had two hits, with Keller adding a pair of walks.

Tyler Daig took the loss in relief for UMW, allowing one run on three hits in 2.2 innings.

The Eagles will host St. John Fisher College on Sunday at 1:00 for a doubleheader.
