UMW Baseball Rips 27 Hits En Route to 25-2 Win Over Rivier

The University of Mary Washington baseball team lashed out 27 hits in a 25-2 victory over Rivier College on Sunday afternoon at Dickinson Stadium. the Eagles improve to 9-2 on the season.

After allowing a run in the first, the Eagles plated one in the first, and seven in the second. Rivier scored again in the third, but UMW exploded for three in the fourth, six in the fifth, and six in the seventh.The Eagles capped the scoring with two runs in the eighth.

Freshman centerfielder Nolan Gilbert led the way for UMW with four hits, four runs scored, and three RBI, and Derek Nease, Cuyler Matteson, Brendan Jones, and Kevin Stein each collected three hits. Brian Burns had two hits and three RBI, and Jono Haught went 2-3 with two RBI. James Keller also went 2-3 with two runs scored.

Senior Seth Taylor gained the win for UMW, allowing one hit in six innings of relief, walking three and striking out 11.

The two teams will meet for a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Monday.
