UMW Baseball Plates Four in Ninth to Defeat Bridgewater, 8-7

The University of Mary Washington baseball team scored four runs in the ninth inning en route to an 8-7 victory at Bridgewater College on Wednesday in Bridgewater. The Eagles improve to 17-10 on the season.

UMW jumped ahead with two runs in the first, as Connor Lilley singled and Brendan Jones reached on an error, and after a sacrifice, Jono Haught provided a two-run double. Bridgewater answered with four runs in the first, Jones provided an RBI single cut the deficit to 4-3. BC scored twice in the second to run its lead to 6-3, and UMW cut into the lead with an RBI groundout by James Sink in the fifth.

After Bridgewater scored a run in the eighth to up the advantage to 7-4, the visitors used a four-run ninth to take the lead. Seth Jordan led off by reaching on an error, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. After Haught was hit by a pitch, Cam Kostyack reached on a fielder's choice, with Jordan scoring on an error.

After a sacrifice moved runners to second and third, Sink drove home a run on a groundout. Then, pinch hitter Connor Finnerty provided a two-run triple to tie the score, and he scored on a two-out single from Kevin Stein.

Senior Joe Carleton pitched two innings of relief, including a scoreless ninth, for the win. The Eagle bullpen allowed three earned runs in 8.1 innings of relief.

Offensively, Finnerty's triple was the key hit in the game, while Conner Lilley, Jones, Haught, Kostyack, and T.J. Cretney each had two hits in the Eagles' 13-hit attack.

Mary Washingotn will be back in action on Thursday when they visit Randolph-Macon College at 3:30 p.m.
