UMW Baseball Tops Va. Wesleyan, 6-3, in Sunday Action

Senior first baseman Seth Jordan singled twice, doubled, and tripled and classmate Mike Straub scattered seven hits in seven innings in picking up the win, as the University of Mary Washington baseball team topped Virginia Wesleyan College, 6-3, on Sunday in Virginia Beach. The Eagles improve to 8-7 on the season.

UMW jumped ahead in the third, as leadoff man Conner Lilley singled up the middle with two outs, and scored on a Brendan Jones RBI double. UMW extended the lead to 2-0 in the sixth as Jones, Jordan, and Jono Haught connected with three straight singles.

In the seventh, the Eagles plated three runs. Alex Bryant hit a one-out double, and was sacrificed to third. Lilley reached on an error to plate Bryant, and Jones followed with a walk. Jordan doubled home both runners, and was UMW's fifth double of the day.

The Marlins answered with three runs in the seventh, but junior Jake Black pitched two perfect innings of relief in gaining the save. UMW scored once in the ninth as Lilley was hit by a pitch and scored on a Jordan triple.

Straub (3-1) scattered seven hits in seven innings in gaining the win, walking four and striking out five batters. Offensively, Jordan had four hits including a double and triple, driving in three. Jones was 3-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, and Haught had two hits for the Eagles as well.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they visit Catholic University at 3:30 p.m.
