The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to 19th ranked Shenandoah University on Tuesday, falling to 7-6 on the season.

Both starting pitchers fared well early on, as neither team scored in the first two frames. The Hornets scored two in the third on a pair of walks and a balk, followed by an RBI single. With the bases loaded and no one out, Eagle starter Mike Straub then induced a popup to third, then struck out the next two hitters to end the threat.

The Eagles answered with a run in the fifth as freshman james Sink tripled and scored on a single from freshman Conner Lilley. The Hornets broke the game open with three in the sixth, scoring three unearned runs on an error, a hit by pitch, and a walk, and one two-run single, capping the scoring.

Sink singled and tripled, T.J. Cretney singled and doubled, and Lilley singled twice for the Eagles. Straub took the loss, allowing five hits and five runs (two earned) in 6.1 innings, with three walks and eight strikeouts. Freshman David Phillips threw 2,2 innings of spotless relief.

Freshman David Phillips gained the win for Shenandoah, scattering nine hits in nine innings, with one run allowed and eight strikeouts.

The Eagles' Wenesday doubleheader against Virginia State has been postponed due to weather, and UMW is due to visit Shenandoah on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
