UMW Baseball Drops Game to Randolph-Macon, 2-0; Second Game Finishes in 14 inning Tie


The University of Mary Washington baseball team dropped the first game of its Saturday doubleheader with Randolph-Macon, falling, 2-0, before seeing the second game end in a 1-1 tie after 14 innings. UMW moves to 1-2-1 overall.

In the opener, Randolph-Macon scored once in the first and once in the fifth and held the Eagles scoreless. Senior shortstop Brent Steffey had a pair of hits to pace UMW, who had six hits in all. Junior Mike Straub allowed two earned runs in seven innings, allowing seven hits while walking five and striking out five.

In the nightcap, the Eagles allowed a seocnd inning run, but plated one in the bottom of the seventh to tie the score. The game went through seven more scoreless innings before finishing in a 1-1 tie. Freshman centerfielder Brendan Jones had three hits for the Eagles, while Matt Kaler added a pair of hits. Matt Abramson allowed one earned run on four hits in nine innings, walking three and striking out nine. Chris Somerville pitched four innings of one-hit relief, allowing no walks and two strikeouts.

The Eagles' game against Catholic University on Sunday has been postponed. UMW will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Bridgewater College at 3:00 p.m.
