Rudman's Pinch Hit Single Lifts UMW Baseball Past Catholic, 2-1

Freshman Jake Rudman provided a pinch-hit single with one out in the ninth inning to plate the winning run, as the University of Mary Washington baseball team edged Catholic University, 2-1, on Tuesday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 25-14 on the year.

In a game very unlike the teams' meeting two weeks ago - a 13-11 UMW win at Talbot Field - freshmen pitchers Nick McGovern and Seth Taylor were strong from the start, as McGovern allowed one run on two hits in 1.1 innings, and Taylow pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless relief, scattering six hits.

Torey Mancari earned the win with three perfect innings with six strikeouts in his school-record 16th appearance.

Trailing 1-0 in the sixth, Eric Rehbein and Brent Steffey singled, advanced on a bunt, and Rehbein scored on an RBI groundout by Mitchell Herringshaw. UMW won the game when Herringshaw led off the ninth with a single and stole second, and came home on Rudman's RBI single.

The Eagles will be idle until after finals. They will next play on May 1 at Randolph-Macon College at 1:00 p.m.
