The University of Mary Washington baseball team exploded for 15 runs to defeat Frostburg State University, 15-6, to force a winner-take-all game, but the Bobcats answered with a 9-5 win to claim the CAC Championship on Sunday in Salisbury, Md. The Eagles advanced to the championship round for the ninth time in the past 11 years.

In the opener, shortstop Brent Steffey collected a career-high five hits to pace the 22-hit attack, scoring three runs and driving in four. Senior CF Jackson Clement added three hits and four RBI. Shane Sixsmith and Beattie Southerland each added three hits. Santino Rosanova had three RBI for UMW.

On the mound, freshman Chris Somerville allowed one hit in three innings to gain the win in relief. Senior John Miscioscia threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief as well.

In the title game, the Eagles jumped ahead, 2-0, in the first, but Frostburg added three runs in the second, and added to their lead in the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth, UMW scored twice in the ninth, but fell just short.

Beattie Southerland, Eric Rehbein, Brent Steffey, and Mitchell Herringshaw each had two hits to lead UMW, with Herringshaw adding three RBI. Rehbein took the loss, pitching 5.2 innings on two days rest, allowing five earned runs with one walk and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will continue their quest for the NCAA Tournament on Tuesday, when they host Catholic University at 3:30 p.m.
