UMW Baseball Tops Catholic in Back and Forth Slugfest, 13-11

The University of Mary Washington baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead against Catholic University, fell behind 11-6, and stormed back for a 13-11 win on Wednesday afternoon at Talbot Field in Washington, D.C. The Eagles, who pounded out 14 hits, improve to 19-11 on the season.

The Eagles scored one run in the first and four in the second to take a 5-0 lead. But the Cardinals scored three in the second and three in the third to take the lead at 6-5. After the Eagles tied the game at six in the fifth, CUA scored five times in the sixth to take an 11-6 lead.

After UMW scored three runs in the seventh to cut the margin to 11-9, junior Brent Steffey (Colonial Beach, Va., Colonial Beach) hit a three-run homer to put the Eagles ahead for good in the eighth. The Eagles added an insurance run in the ninth.

At the plate, Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) went 3-4 with two RBI and was hit by a pitch, while Steffey went 2-2 with two walks, the three-run homer, and five RBI. Mitchell Herringshaw (Chardon, Ohio, Notre Dame Latin) and Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) each had two hits for the Eagles as well.

Freshman Jake Black (Fredericksburg, Va., Colonial Forge) gained the win in relief for UMW, as he allowed no runs in 1.2 innings with one walk and three strikeouts. Sophomore Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va., Paul VI) earned the save with 1.2 innings of one-hit relief.

The Eagles will host Frostburg State University in a key Capital Athletic Conference game on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
