UMW Baseball Splits Twinbill with York

The University of Mary Washington baseball team split a Sunday doubleheader at York College, falling in the opener, 6-5, before winning the nightcap, 6-2. The Eagles move to 17-11 overall, and 7-8 in Capital Athletic Conference play.

In the opener, the Eagles led, 5-3, in the seventh, but York scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to win. Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) had a single and a solo home run to lead the Eagles at the plate, while Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) added a single and double, and Ben Sisk (Chesterfield, Va., Cosby) added two hits.

Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) took the loss for the Eagles, allowing five earned runs in 6.2 innings with seven strikeouts.

In game two, the Eagles scored twic ein the first and four times in the sixth for a 6-2 win. Freshman Beattie Southerland (Purcellville, Va., Loudoun Valley) led UMW with a pair of doubles in three at bats, with two runs scored and two RBI. Michael Straub (Falls Church, Va., George Mason) gained his third win in as many starts, allowing two earned runs in three hits in five innings, with three strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Monday, hosting Bridgewater College at 4:00 p.m.
