Herringshaw's Walkoff Single Lifts #24 UMW Baseball Past Salisbury

Freshman left fielder Mitchell Herringshaw (Chadron, Ohio, Notre Dame Latin) had three hits, including the game-winning two-run single with two out in the bottom of the ninth to lead the 24th ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team to a 7-6 win over \#25 Salisbury University in a Capital Athletic Conference contest at Dickinson Stadium on Sunday. The Eagles improve to 12-3 on the season, and 4-2 in CAC play.

The Eagles jumped ahead with two runs in the first and two in the third. After Salisbury cut the deficit to 4-1, the Eagles stranded five runners on base in the next two innings, and the Sea Gulls amassed five of their eight hits in a five-run seventh to take a 6-4 lead.

UMW answered with a single run in the seventh as freshman first baseman Jeff Rezach (Mendham, N.J., West Morris Mendham) drove home shortstop Brent Steffey (Colonial Beach, Va., Colonial Beach) with an RBI single. In the ninth, center fielder Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) singled to center, and moved to second on a walk to Rezach, who was erased on a fielder's choice by Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County), with Clement moving to third. Pinch runner Jeff Zeisler (Norfolk, Va., Granby) moved to second as Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.

Herringshaw provided a single to center to plate Clement and Zeisler for the tying and winning runs. In addition, Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac), Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga), Steffey, Clement, and Rezach all added two hits for the Eagles.

Junior Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha) picked up the win in relief, as he allowed one earned run in three innings with no walks and one strikeout. Parker Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va., Cape Henry Collegiate) allowed six hits in six innings, with two walks and two strikeouts.

Mary Washington will visit Wesley College for another CAC game on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
