Rehbein Leads #22 UMW Baseball Past Gettysburg, 8-1

Senior pitcher Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) earned his fourth win of the season and also chipped in with three hits to lead the 22nd ranked University of Mary Washington baseball team to an 8-1 win over Gettysburg College on Friday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 10-1 overall on the year.

Rehbein scattered eight hits in seven innings on Friday, allowing one earned run while walking none and striking out four. At the plate, he had three singles, drove in a run with a sacrifice fly, and scored a run.

The Eagles bunched their runs together, scoring three in the first and five in the seventh. In the first, Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) reached on an error and moved to third on a single by Beattie Southerland (Purcellville, Va., Loudoun Valley), the first of his four hits on the day. Rehebin followed with a sacrifice fly to put the Eagles ahead.

Shortstop Brent Steffey (Colonial Beach, Va., Colonial Beach) doubled down the left field line to move Southerland to third, and Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) followed with a single to left to plate Southerland. Freshman 1B Jeff Rezach (Mendham, N.J., West Morris Mendham) reached on a fielder's choice, allowing Steffey to score to give UMW a 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, Sixsmith, Southerland, and Rehbein all singled before Steffey walked after a 14-pitch at bat. After a pitching change, Clement walked to score Southerland, and all three runners advanced on a passed ball. A wild pitch left another run in, and third baseman Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) capped the scoring with an RBI single to left.

Sophomores Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va., Paul VI) and Nick Corbin (Staunton, Va., Buffalo Gap) pitched two scoreless innings of relief.

The Eagles will be back in action Sunday when they visit Hampden-Sydney College at 1:00 p.m.
