Rosanova's Hit Leads UMW Baseball Past Stevenson, 2-1

Junior third baseman Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) singled to right field with one out in the ninth inning to plate freshman first baseman Jeff Rezach (Mendham, N.J., West Morris Mendham), as the University of Mary Washington baseball team topped Stevenson University, 2-1, in both teams' Capital Athletic Conference opener on Thursday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 6-0 overall.

The Mustangs scored first in the game, using a hit and two errors to plate a run in the second inning. The Eagles tied the score at one in the fifth, as Rosanova singled and moved to third on a Jon Zimmerman (Vinton, Va., William Byrd) double. Left fielder Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) provided a sacrifice fly to plate the tying run.

In the bottom of the ninth and the score still tied at one, Rezach walked with one out and moved to second on a single by Seth Jordan (Springfield, Va., South County). Rosanova followed with a single to right to score Rezach with the winning run.

Rosanova led the Eagles with two hits in two at bats, with a walk and a hit by pitch. Jordan singled and walked and Rezach walked twice for UMW. Sophomore Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va., Paul VI) picked up the win in relief, allowing no runs and two hits in two innings with no walks and three strikeouts. Senior Parker Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va., Cape Henry Collegiate) threw the first seven innings, allowing one unearned run on three hits, with two walks and eight K's.
