UMW Baseball Tops Christopher Newport, 5-3

Junior third baseman Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) collected three hits to pace a University of Mary Washington 12-hit attack as the Eagles topped Christopher Newport University, 5-3, on Tuesday at V. Earl Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 3-0, while the Captains fall to 1-1.

The Eagles jumped ahead with three runs in the second. Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson) led off with a single, and moved to second on a one-out hit by Rosanova. Jeff Zeisler (Norfolk, Va., Granby) followed with a single to right to load the bases, and two runs scored as Jon-Michael Zimmerman (Vinton, Va., William Byrd) reached on a two-base error. Zeisler scored on a Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) sacrifice fly.

Neither team would score again until the sixth. After the Captains scored a pair of unearned runs, UMW answered with a pair of runs of their own, as Jeff Rezach (Mendham, N.J., West Morris Mendham) doubled and Rosanova followed with a single to put runners at the corners. Zeisler followed with a sacrifice fly to left to plate Rezach. Sixsmith reached on a bunt single, and Rosanova scored on right fielder Beattie Southerland (Purcellville, Va., Loudoun Valley)'s fourth double of the season.

Senior Parker Talbert (Virginia Beach, Va., Cape Henry Collegiate) picked up the win, allowing five hits and two unearned runs in 5.2 innings, with two walks and five strikeouts. Sophomore Torey Mancari (Warrenton, Va., Paul VI) allowed two hits in 2.1 innings, and junior Ryan Engelking (Silver Spring, Md., DeMatha) earned his second save with a scoreless ninth.

In addition to Rosanova's three safeties, Southerland and Rezach singled and doubled, and Sixsmith and Zeisler each singled and added a sacrifice fly.

The Eagles will be back in action on Sunday when they host Penn State Harrisburg for a noon doubleheader.
