UMW Baseball Edges Bridgewater, 3-2

The University of Mary Washington baseball team scratched across runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings and held on for a 3-2 win over Bridgewater College on Wednesday at Dickinson Stadium. The Eagles improve to 10-5 on the season with the win.

UMW opened the scoring with a run in the third, as Nick Espinosa (Arnold, Md., Broadneck) was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, and advanced to second. Sophomore Shane Sixsmith (Alexandria, Va., West Potomac) moved Espinosa to third on an infield groundout, and Espinosa scored on a two-out RBI single by right fielder Jackson Clement (Fairfax, Va., Woodson).

The Eagles plated another run in the fourth as Santino Rosanova (Laurel, Md., DeMatha) singled, moved to second on an Espinosa single, and went to third as Sixsmith loaded the bases with a walk. Clement again provided the RBI as he was hit by a pitch to bring Rosanova home.

UMW's final run came in the fifth as Will Wright (St. Louis, Mo., St. Louis Priory) singled and advanced to second on a groundout by Seth Jordan. Alex Howell (Glen Allen, Va., Hermitage)'s two-out single plated Wright with what proved to be the game winning run, as Bridgewater scratched across two runs in the eighth.

Junior Eric Rehbein (Alexandria, Va., Gonzaga) gained the win for the Eagles, going 7.2 innings and allowing two runs on eight hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. Freshman Nick Corbin (Staunton, Va., Buffalo Gap) picked up the save, allowing one hit in 1.1 innings of work.

Mary Washington will visit Salisbury University on Friday at 2:00 p.m. in a makeup of an earlier rainout.
