The 19th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team defeated DePauw University, 6-3, on Saturday at the Indoor Tennis Center. The Eagles improve to 15-3 on the season.
UMW got off to a quick start, winning at two doubles, 8-2, as Brandon Griffin and Stratton Gilmore emerged victorious. The Eagles dropped decisions at one and three doubles to trail, 2-1, entering singles play.
But UMW took over in singles competition, winning five of six matches for the 6-3 win. Tyler Carey won, 6-2, 6-2, at one; Griffin won, 6-2, 7-5, at three, Evan Charles won, 6-7, 6-3, 10-8, at four; Eric Hurwitz won, 6-3, 6-4 at five; and Andrew Curtis won at six, 6-3, 6-2.
The Eagles, winners of eight straight matches, will be back in action again on Wednesday when they host Salisbury University and St. Mary's College in Capital Athletic Conference play.
