University of Mary Washington volleyball coach Alex Hinsey has accepted the position of head coach at Division I Gardner Webb University.

Hinsey has been head coach at Mary Washington since 2020, and in four seasons, guided the Eagles to a 91-38 record, with two NCAA Tournament appearances and one Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference championship. (The 2021 season was cancelled due to Covid). The Eagles finished 30-5 this fall, returning for the second straight season to the NCAA Tournament sweet 16.

"We are grateful for all that Coach Hinsey has done in leading our volleyball program for the past five years - elevating the team to consistent regional and national rankings as well as two NCAA championship appearances, advancing to the third round in both years", said UMW Director of Athletics Patrick Catullo. "While we are saddened that Coach is leaving, we are excited for him and the opportunity to bolster a strong Division I program."

A national search to hire Hinsey's replacement will begin immediately.
