#22 UMW Volleyball Sweeps Muhlenberg to Improve to 2-0

The 22nd ranked University of Mary Washington volleyball team jumped out to a big lead in the first game, overcame a huge deficit in the second, and put forth a consistent effort throughout in a 3-0 victory over Muhlenberg College on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. Game scores were 25-16, 25-21, 25-16; the Eagles improve to 2-0 on the season.

In the opening game, UMW scored the first three points, and, after Muhlenberg had trimmed the lead to 5-4, scored 10 of the next 11 points to take a commanding 15-5 advantage. Bryanna Miller, Emma Hadley, and Marie Butler led the charge during the run at the net. The Mules battled back to 20-16, but the Eagles scored five of the last seven points for the game.

In the second, tthe Eagles sruggled out of the gate, trailing 7-2, but mounted a charge that pulled them to within 12-9. After a Muhlenberg point, the Eagles reeled off nine straight points, keyed by a pair of kills from Caitlyn Burch and a pair of aces from Lauren Foley. But Muhlenberg scored seven of the next nine to knot the score at 20-20. But UMW scored five of the last six, with Emma Hadley and Jordan Lyons each scoring two kills to put he game away at 25-21.

The third game saw the teams trade runs early, as the score stood tied at 5-5. UMW netted he nex four points, but Muhlenberg rallied for three of their own, and the score remained close until the Eagles posted four of the last five points to take a 25-21 score in the third.

Hadley led he Eagles with 12 kills against two errors in 23 attempts, while Lyons scored eight kills and Miller seven. Brooke Cunningham posted 21 assists and Foley 15, and Hannah Livermon and Lyons each recorded 19 digs. 

The Eagles will be back in action on Tuesday when they host Eastern Mennonite University at 6:30 p.m.
