Balanced Attack Leads UMW Volleyball Past DeSales, 3-2

Five different players recorded at least nine kills as the University of May Washington volleyball team defeated DeSales University, 3-2, on Friday night at the Stevenson University Invitational in Owings Mills, Md. Game scores were 25-22, 19-25, 25-8, 21-25, 15-11; the Eagles improve to 4-3 on the season.

In the first game, the Eagles hit a robust .353, and carried leads of as many as four points throughout much of the action. The Bulldogs responded with a rally late, tying the score at 19-19. Mary Washington responded with six of the final nine points to claim the game, as a pair of kills from senior Aidan Finegan proved critical.

After dropping the second game, UMW hit .385 in the third, with just one team error, in taking an easy 25-8 score. But DeSales fought back to win the fourth, setting up a classic fifth game, which the Eagles claimed, 15-11. UMWtrailed by as many as four (8-4) in the abbreviated fifth game, but roared back with seven of the next eight points to take all the momentum and an 11-9 lead. UMW would go on to score four of the final six points to claim the game and match.

Ally Fletcher led the Eagles with 12 kills, while Jordan Lyons and Aidan Finegan each had 10. Olivia Casey and Krista Rodges each recorded nine. Makenna Santinga posted 28 assists, while Lauren Foley added 17, and Lyons led five players in digs with 18, followed by Sarah Moore with 16. Rodgers and Finegan each had three blocks.

The Eagles will return to action in Owings Mills on Saturday against Dickinson at noon and the hosts Stevenson at 4 p.m.
