#15 UMW Women's Tennis Tops #25 CNU, 5-1, for 2022 C2C Championship

The 15th ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team defeated #25 Christopher Newport University, 5-1, on Sunday afternoon at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center. The Eagles improve to 12-5 on the season, and claim their 18th consecutive conference championship. 

In doubles play, the Eagles quickly jumped ahead, 2-0, after the conclusion of the first two matches. Senior Claire Coleman and junior Amanda Hagino topped Megan Bauer and Karina Crivtonencu at two, 8-1, and Hana Kimmey and Emily Beckner defeated Ana Clara Borga and Kendra Womack at three, 8-4.

The final doubles match - at one - went back and forth, as Eagles Abby Moghtader and Lauren Quinn fell behind, 6-3, rallied back to 6-5, but fell, 8-6. The teams moved to singles play with the Eagles leading, 2-1.

The top of the lineup for Mary Washingotn proved to be too much on Sunday, as Coleman sailed to a 6-2, 6-3 win at two over Tessa Trate, and Abby Moghtader defeated C2C Player of the Year Raine Weiss, 6-2, 6-4, at one. Quinn won the clinching match for the second straight day, downing Kiersten Chang, 6-3, 6-0, at three, sending the Eagles to another title.

Mary Washington will advance to the NCAA Championship, which begins next weekend on campus locations. The draw for the tournament will be announced on Monday.
