UMW Women's Lax Tops Kenyon, 10-8

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team gained a 10-8 victory over Kenyon College on Thursday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles improve to 2-3 on the season.

First year Abigail Fisher opened the scoring for the Eagles at 13:52 of the first quarter on a Victoria Mueller assist, and, after a Kenyon score, the Eagles built the lead to 3-1, with scores from Katie Blair and Mueller. The Owls cut the deficit to 3-2 at the final horn of the first.

In the second quarter, Kenyon tied the score, but the Eagles responded with a pair of goals from Bridget Crowley to gain a 5-3 advantage. Crowley added another with 4:55 left before halftime, and the Eagles led, 6-5, at intermission.

The Owls took the lead in the third, outscoring UMW, 3-1. The Eagles' marker came from Caeley Terapane at 6:22 on a Crowley assist. In the fourth quarter, UMW scored in the opening minute on a Crowley score assisted by Taylar Hackney feed, and took the lead for good on a Blair score with 6:40 left. Kendel Iwanicki capped the scoring with a big insurance goal with 13 seconds left, and the defense shut out Kenyon in the fourth.

Kenyon led in shots, 31-29, as well as ground balls, 21-19. UMW goalkeeper Cailyn Tripp made 15 saves on the day.

The Eagles will return to action on Sunday when they face Haverford College in Baltimore, Md. at 5:00 p.m.
