UMW Women's Lax Falls to #17 U Chicago, 7-5, on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 7-5 decision to 17th ranked University of Chicago on Sunday afternoon at the Battleground. The Eagles fall to 5-2 on the season.

UChicago jumped ahead early, as the Maroons scored three times in the opening 4:43 of the first quarter. After a timeout, the Eagles collected themselves, and battled back. Senior Kayla Sarazin put the Eagles on the board with a tally unassisted with 2:15 left in the first.

Early in the second, UMW climbed to within 3-2, as Victoria Mueller scored on a free position shot with 9:53 left. Chicago answered with a free position score 26 seconds later, but UMW scored again with 8:10 left, as Clare Madden scored on a Sarazin assist. The Maroons capped the second quarter scoring to take a 5-3 lead to halftime.

In the third, UMW pulled to within 5-4 on a Molly Daw goal assisted by Maya Koebke with 9:30 remaining. Chicago scored the next goal with 4:27 left on a free position score, and carried the lead at 6-4 to the fourth quarter.

The Eagles again pulled to within one, at 6-5, as Ashley Firesheets scored on a Sarazin assist with 14:35 left, but the only other score in the fourth came from Chicago with 5:20 left.

Mary Washington led in shots, 27-19, as well as draw controls, 9-7. Koebke and Meredith Farley led UMW with four ground balls each. UMW goalkeeper Cailyn Tripp had six saves.

The Eagles will be back in action on Wednesday when they host Stevens Institute at 3:00 p.m.
