York Upends UMW Women's Lacrosse, 17-11, on Saturday in CAC Action

The University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team dropped a 17-11 decision to visiting York College on Saturday at the Battleground. The Eagles slip to 6-6 on the season.

There were five goals in the opening 4:53 to start the game, alternating between the Spartans and Eagles. After York scored first, freshman Holly Hudson scored with 28:21 left to tie the score at one. York answered at 26:44 on a free position shot, but the Eagles tied the score again at two, as Kate Smucker scored on a Corinne Wiederkehr assist with 25:52 left.

York scored less than a minute later to regain the lead, but once again UMW answered, as Wiederkehr scored with 21:05 left off an Emily Mott assist to knot the score at 3-3. York regained the lead at 20:35, but the Eagles tied the score at 19:37 on an Ashlyn Dacey goal, and took their first lead on a Smucker goal just four seconds later. Both scores were assisted by Wiederkehr.

York then scored twice to take a 6-5 lead with 12:28 left in the half. The Eagles then went on a run, scoring four of the game's next five goals. Wiederkehr scored on an Emily Mott assist with 10:03 left, and Casey Ryan scored on a free position score with 8:47 to go. After a Spartan score, Dacey scored with 6:54 left, and Kelsey Vincent added another with5:58 left on a Smucker assist to give the Eagles a 9-7 lead. York scored with 2:46 remaining to cut the halftime deficit to 9-8.

York went on a spurt of their own in the second, scoring five straight to take a 13-9 lead with 12:43 left. Smucker scored with 11:46 left to cut the margin to 13-10, but York then scored two more before Dacey scored her third goal of the day with 4:53 left.

The Eagles led in shots, 28-27, and in ground balls, 22-17. Senior Taylor Paige made seven saves in goal for UMW, while Paige Thumel had six ground balls and four caused turnovers. Wiederkehr had three goals and three assists for UMW.

Mary Washington will return to action on Wednesday when they host St. Mary's College at 4:00 p.m. as part of the Spring Jubilee.
