UMW Women's Lax Tops Catholic, 10-9

Junior midfielder Jenna Petrucelli scored three goals and senior Keller Torrey added two goals and one assist in leading the University of Mary Washington women's lacrosse team to a 10-9 win over visiting Catholic University on Tuesday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 6-4 on the season.

The Cardinals jumped ahead early, holding a 2-0 lead with three minutes elapsed. Torrey scored on a Corinne Wiederkehr assist at the 24:23 mark to cut the deficit to one, but the Cardinals answered again at 21:38 to move the lead to 3-1.

Torrey scored unassisted at 19:32, and junior Megan Gersbeck added another at 18:34 on an Emily Atkinson pass to tie the score at three. The Cardinals scored twice to take a 5-3 lead, but again UMW answered with goals from Katie Williams at 2:10 and Petrucelli with 25 seconds left to tie the score. Catholic scored with 13 seconds left to take a 6-5 lead to halftime.

The Cards scored in the opening seconds of the second half to take a 7-5 lead, but UMW responded with goals from Petrucelli at 23:57 and Gersbeck at 21:39 to again tie the score. After Lindsay Brophy put CUA ahead, 8-7, with 18:44 to play, UMW scored three straight goals.

Freshman Kara Hogan scored on an eight meter shot to tie the score at 11:01, and Atkinson put the Eagles ahead to stay with 4:31 left. Petrucelli scored with 2:59 left, and the Cardinals capped the scoring with 1:45 to play.

The Eagles led in shots, 30-23, and in ground balls, 19-18. UMW goalkeeper Kathryn Stiltz had nine saves, and Katie Mastropaolo led the Eagles with five ground balls. Atkinson added a goal and two assists for UMW.

Mary Washington will next play on Saturday when they visit #2 Salisbury University on Saturday at noon.
