UMW Women's Basketball Falls at #1 CNU, 74-49, on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team dropped a 74-49 decision at Christopher Newport University on Wednesday evening in Newport News, Va. The Eagles slip to 19-5 on the season.

The Eagles started swiftly, building a 16-15 lead in the first quarter. After the Eagles jumped out to a 6-2 lead at the outset, CNU answered with a run that put thhem in front, 11-6, with 5:01 left in the first quarter. UMW closed the frame with a 10-4 run, and led by a 16-15 margin after the first 10 minutes.

Christopher Newport started the second quarter with a 10-1 run to take a 25-17 lead, before a basket from Sophia Pavlech stemmed the tide with 6:24 remaining. After CNU extended the margin to 10 points, SYdney Sherman and Lexi Miller each scored to cut the deficit to 29-23 with2:33 left. Sherman then followed with a three point play to draw the Eagles to within 29-26, and Miller followed with two free throws to pull the Eagles to within one. CNU ended the second quarter on a 7-0 run to take a 36-28 lead to halftime.

The Captains extended the lead in the third by outscoring the Eagles, 23-14, and finished the contest by outscoring the Eagles, 15-7, in the fourth. 

UMW was led by Sherman's 12 points, while senior Ashley Martin added 10 before fouling out. Keagan Schwab led the Eagles with 10 rebounds.

The Eagles shot 40.9% from the field (18-44), making 3-12 three point shots and 10-17 free throws. CNU shot 39.7% (25-63), making 3-19 three point tries and 21-31 free throws. The Eagles won the rebounding battle, 37-35, but comitted 30 turnovers in the contest.

UMW will close the regular season on Saturday when the Eagles host Salisbury University at 1:00 p.m.
