Sophomore Keagan Schwab scored a team-high 19 points to lead three Eagles in double figures as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team defeated Finlandia University, 66-53, on Thursday evening in Santa Cruz, California at the Coast-to-Coast Athletic Conference Tournament first round. The Eagles improve to 18-8 on the season, and will face top-seeded Christopher Newport University on Friday in the semifinal round.

The Eagles came out red hot, extending their lead to 16 points by the end of the first quarter. UMW scored eight straight after giving up the first basket of the game, including four from sophomore Jordan Carpenter. A three pointer from Schwab with 4:04 left gave the Eagles a 13-7 lead, and kickstarted eight straight points from the sophomore, and a 12-0 run to end the frame for the Eagles.

In the second quarter, Finlandia responded with a 21-10 run in the frame, drawing to within one point, at 29-28, with 1:45 remaining. But the Eagles responded with baskets from senior Bri Harper and freshman Addie Riner to take a 33-28 lead to halftime.

In the third, the Eagles extended their lead to six with a Schwab three pointer with 7:38 remaining, but eight straight points from Finlandia gave them the lead, 40-38, with 4:19 remaining in the third. Finlandia would take a four-point lead in the final minutes, but a three point play from junior Karissa Highlander and a Riner layup knotted the score, and an Ashley Martin basket regained the lead for the Eagles, 47-45, just before the third quarter buzzer.

The Eagles outscored Finlandia, 19-9, in the fourth to pull away for the 13-point win. Schwab scored 19 points on 7-12 shooting, making 3-4 three pointers and 2-3 on free throws. Carpenter and Ashley Martin each scored 12 points as well for the Eagles.

UMW shot 46.0% from the field (23-50), making 5-13 three point baskets and 15-19 free throws. Finlandia shot 42.6% (20-47), making 3-13 three point tries and 10-15 free throws.
