Carpenter Leads UMW Women Past Pratt, 62-32, on Saturday

Sophomore forward Jordna Carpenter scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 62-32 victory over Pratt Institute on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena as part of the C2C Classic. The Eagles improve to 17-6 on the season.

The Eagles gained control early, outscoring the Cannoneers, 13-4, in the first quarter. The Eagles opened the contest on a 13-0 run, with six different players contributing points. Pratt scored the final four points of the frame.

In the second, Tory Martin became UMW's seventh player in the scoring column, and Keagan Schwab and Carpenter added their second baskets to extend the Eagle lead to 19-4 with 6:51 left before halftime. Carpenter added another to push the lead to 17, and Schwab completed a three-point play to extend the lead to 24-8. After Pratt scored six straight, Tory Matin and Bri Harper added baskets to send UMW to intermission with a 28-15 lead.

In the third, the teams traded baskets early, before a pair of Carpenter baskets put the Eagles ahead, 40-17, with 5:43 left in the frame. UMW closed the third with nine straight points, with Carpenter and Syney Sherman each scoring a pair of baskets.

In the fourth, the Cannoneers cut into the lead, but a late basket from Andrea Lefkowitz and a three pointer from Lexi Miller returned the margin, and an Emily Shively free throw capped the scoring.

Carpenter shot 7-10 from the floor and 3-4 from the free throw line as the only Eagle in double figures. Schwab added nine points and eight rebounds.

UMW shot 39.3% (24-61) from the field, making 1-15 three point shots and 13-21 free throws. Pratt shot 27.1% (13-48), making 6-11 free throws. The Eagle defense forced 30 Pratt turnovers.

UMW will face UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at noon, with Pratt taking on Christopher Newport at 2:00 at Ron Rosner Arena.
