Defense Leads UMW Women to 55-35 Win Over #25 Gettysburg on Sunday

The University of Mary Washington relied on a strong defensive effort and double figures from senior Tory Martin and junior Ashley Martin in a 55-35 victory over 25th ranked Gettysburg College on Sunday at the Moravian College Holiday Classic in Bethlehem, Pa. The Eagles improve to 12-1 and extend their win streak to seven.

The Eagles scompletely dominated from the opening tip, carrying a 16-8 lead through one quarter and 33-12 at halftime. Neither team saw shots falling early on, as the score stood at 6-4 in Gettysburg's favor with 4:07 left. From there, UMW used a 12-2 run, keyed by four points each from Ashley and Tory Martin

In the second, UMW outscored the Bullets, 17-4, to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Jordan Carpenter scored five points in the quarter and senior guard Bri Harper added four, while the Eagles limited Gettysburg to just 1-14 shooting in the period.

Tory Martin led the Eagles with 12 points, and added eight rebounds. Ashley Martin scored 10 points, and Carpenter added nine points and 15 rebounds. 

The Eagles shot 26.2% from the floor (16-61), making 1-11 three point attempts and 22-28 free throws. Gettysburg shot 23.5% (12-51), making 0-9 three point attempts and 11-23 free throws. The Eagles dominated the boards, 56-35.

Mary Washington will face Widener University on Monday at 11 a.m. on day two of the event.
