MVP Schwab Lifts UMW Women to Montclair St. Tourney Title, 56-44

Sophomore guard Keagan Schwab was named tournament MVP after scoring 18 points in leading the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team to a 56-44 victory at Montclair Sate University on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles improve to 11-1 on the season and run their win streak to six straight.

Both teams came out firing in the first quarter, as the Eagles built an 18-14 lead. Scoring remained tight in the first, as Schwab scored the first six Eagle points. A pair of Schwab free throws gave UMW a 13-9 lead with 3:40 remaining, and a three pointer from senior Bri Harper gave the Eagles an 18-9 advantage. The Red Hawks scored the final five points of the frame to pull to within 18-14.

The Eagles pulled away in the second, limiting the hosts to just six points, which ended up being the difference in the game. UMW opened the second by scoring the first seven points, and extended the lead to as many as 14, at 31-17, with 1:09 left, and carried a 32-20 lead to halftime.

UMW opened the third with a 6-2 run, and held a double digit lead throughout. A Schwab three pointer with 5:05 left upped the lead to 43-27, before the hosts pulled back to within 11 to close the quarter. The Eagles started the fourth quarter with an 8-2 run to put the game away.

Schwab led the Eagles with 18 points on 6-13 shooting, with a pair of three pointers and four free throws, and also added seven rebounds. Junior forward Ashley Martin scored 15 points and added 10 rebounds, and senior forward Tory Martin added 10 points on 5-11 shooting. All-tournament team selection Jordan Carpenter hauled in 11 rebounds.

The Eagles shot 33.3% from the field (18-54), making 3-10 three point attempts and 17-23 free throws. Montclair State shot 24.6% (14-57), making 6-25 three point shots and 10-16 free throws.
