UMW Women Pull Away From Misericordia, 68-52, on Wednesday Night

Sophomore Keagan Schwab scored a season-high 19 points to lead three players in double figures, as the University of Mary Washington women's basketball team broke open a tight contest late to defeat College Misericordia, 68-52, on Wednesday night at the Montclair State University Holiday Tournament in Montclair, N.J. The Eagles, winners of five straight, improve to 10-1 on the season.

The game remained tight through the first quarter, as neither team enjoyed more than a one-score lead until Misericordia took a 10-6 advantage with 2:42 remaining. The Eagles closed the first quarter on a 6-1 run, capped by a Jordan Carpenter basket, to take a 12-11 advantage to period two.

A pair of Ashley Martin free throws extended UMW's lead to 16-11, before a 7-2 run gave the Eagles a 22-14 lead with 6:15 remaining. Schwab added a pair of baskets in the rally. Misericordia was able to counter with a run to knot the score at 29-29 with 1:37 left, and scored two of the final three baskets of the quarter to take a 34-33 lead to halftime.

UMW opened the third quarter on an 8-1 run, including two buckets from Schwab, to take a 41-35 lead with 6:32 remaining. The Eagle lead would teter between four and six points, before Misericordia pulled to within 48-47 with 48 seconds left. Bri Harper's two free throws capped the frame, giving the Eagles a 50-47 lead entering the final ten minutes. In the fourth, the Eagles rolled to an 18-5 advantage to pull away. 

Schwab shot 8-14 to score 19 points, and also added six rebounds, four assists, three blocks, and three steals. Senior Tory Martin scored 15 points on 6-13 shooting, and Carpenter added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

UMW shot 43.5% (27-62), making 1-7 three pointers and 13-16 free throws. Misericordia shot 33.3% (18-54), making 6-25 three point tries and 10-15 free throws. The Eagles led in rebounding, 42-34, and forced 25 turnovers.

The Eagles will face host Montclair State on Thursday at 4:00 p.m. in the tournament championship.
