UMW Women's Basketball Storms Back to top Marymount, 54-52

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team erased a seven-point fourth quarter deficit to upend Marymount University, 54-52, on Saturday afternoon at Ron Rosner Arena. The Eagles improve to 8-1 on the season.

The first quarter was reminiscent of many past battles between the Eagles and Saints, who were longtime Capital Athletic Conference rivals. The Eagles jumped out to a 10-3 advantage, punctuated by a three pointer from sophomore Keagan Schwab with 6:23 remaining. The Saints then went on a run, including eight straight points, to knot the score at 14-14 with 46 second left. The teams traded points to close the frame knotted at 16.

Marymount pulled ahead in the second, outscoring the Eagles, 16-6. including the first 10 points of the quarter. From that point, the remainder of the frame would go back and forth, with the teams each scoring seven points, and the Eagles would trail at intermission, 32-22.

In the third, the Saints opened with an 8-2 run to gain a 40-24 lead with 7:13 left. UMW closed the quarter with a 14-5 run of their own to climb back into contention heading to the fourth. Ashley Martin made a pair of layups and senior Bri Harper hit a big three pointer in the run.

Senior Tory Martin opened the fourth with three straight baskets, and Harper hit another big three with 2:31 left to tie the score at 47-47. After a Marymount basket with 2:04 left, sophomore Sydney Sherman hit a big jumper to retie the score at 49, and Tory Martin then gave the Eagles their first lead since the first quarter with 52 remaining. Free throws from Ashley Martin and Molly Sharman upped the lead to 54-49, and a three pointer from Marymount would cap the scoring at 54-52.

Tory Martin led the Eagles with 16 points and also blocked three shots, while Ashley Martin added 11 points on 4-6 shooting, and added a team-high six assists. Sophomore Jordan Carpenter had a game-high 12 rebounds.

UMW shot 36.4% (20-55), making 4-13 three point attempts and 10-16 free throws. Marymount shot 27.8% (15-54), making 2-8 three point tries and 20-29 free throws. 

The Eagles will be back in action next Sunday when they visit Shenandoah University at 2:00 p.m.
