UMW Women's Basketball Tops Susquehanna, 48-45; Improves to 3-0

The University of Mary Washington women's basketball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 48-45 victory at Susquehanna University in the championship of the Yvonne Young Esworthy Memorial Tournament on Sunday. Junior guard Molly Sharman led the Eagles with 16 points, and senior froward Tory Martin added 11.

The Eagles jumped ahead from the opening tip, and held a 17-7 lead ater one quarter. The Riverhawks knocked one point off the deficit in the second quarter, as the Eagles led, 30-21, at halftime. The hosts were able to cut slightly into the margin in the third and fourth quarters, but in the end, Sharman connected for a basket and a pair of free throws to put the game away.

Sharman shot 5-10 from the floor, and was 6-8 from the free throw line. Martin was 5-12 from the field en route to 11 points, and sophomore Jordan Carpenter controlled the glass with 14 rebounds. Freshman guard Megan Baxter had five steals.

UMW shot 19-62 from the field (30.6%), making 1-8 three pointers and 9-15 free throws. Susquehanna shot 15-53 (28.3%), making 2-17 three point attempts and 13-15 free throws. 

Sharman was named to the all-tournament team, and Carpenter was named the tournament MVP.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday against Meredith Universityat the Virginia Wesleyan University Tournament. Tipoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
