The top two teams in the Capital Athletic Conference standings took the court Saturday at the William M. Anderson Center on the campus of the University of Mary Washington in a battle for first place. Though both teams only managed 13 points a piece in the first half and 81 combined for the game, there was certainly no shortage of excitement as Marymount University defeated the Eagles 42-39 in overtime.

In a back and forth game that saw neither team lead by more than six points throughout, the Saints managed to score eight of the final ten points in regulation to push the game to overtime with the score tied at 34. Marymount struck first in overtime on a layup by forward Tynisha Parks before the Eagles ran off five straight points to go ahead 39-36 with just under three minutes to go in the extra period. The Eagles failed to score again in the extra period and Saints' star guard Katelyn Fischer hit a jumper with 22 seconds remaining to grab the lead and the victory.

Both teams struggled to put points on the board in the first half as the Eagles managed just 16.7% from the field, with the Saints shooting 28.6%. The two teams combined for 18 turnovers and neither team hit a three-pointer as they combined to go 0-10.

Each offense seemed to settle in and find a rythym in the second half. The Eagles went on a 16-4 run over a ten minute span to take their biggest lead of the game, 32-26, with just under four minutes remaining, but Marymount stormed back and tied the game at 34. The Saints' Fischer was fouled with just seven seconds remaining and hit one of two free throws to push the game into the extra period.

Marymount was led by guard Kievanna Lacey's 13 points, and Parks added 11 points and 10 rebounds. Fischer, the Saints' leading scorer was held to seven points on just 2-10 shooting from the floor, well below her season average of 17.8.

The Eagles got another huge game from Senior center Carol Dye who poured in 14 points to go along with 15 boards and seven blocked shots. Junior guard Sam Partonen added 13 points for Mary Washington.

The Eagles, 15-6 overall and 7-2 in the CAC, will be in action again Monday as they host Bridgewater College at 7 PM in a non-conference match-up in the Anderson Center. Marymount, 18-4 overall and 8-1 in the CAC, will travel to Salisbury University Wednesday for a conference game at 5:30 PM.
