Burch, Jester Combine To Pitch Perfect Game as UMW Sweeps Stevenson

The Mary Washington softball team handled Stevenson easily on Tuesday afternoon as the Eagles swept the Mustangs in Owings Mills, Md.

Game 1 - Eagles win - 6-4

A scoreless ballgame until the fourth, the Eagles broke out with a pair of runs when Emma Schieda and Emily Angel recorded a pair of RBI singles to give the Eagles the lead, 2-0.

UMW added another run in the sixth on Erica Shoop's fielder's choice RBI single, then three more in the seventh to push the lead to 6-0. In that inning, Aminah Shakir tripled home a pair of runners, then Bridget Laychak drove Shakir home with a sac fly.

Taylor Hudson got the start for the Eagles, tossing five shutout innings, yielding just four hits and two walks. Caitlyn Burch recorded the last two outs as she recorded her second save of the season.

Game 2 Eagles win - 9-0

The Eagles won a five-inning game after Caitlyn Burch and Sydney Jester combined for a Perfect Game, setting down all 15 hitters the duo faced. Burch got the start in the circle, tossing three innings and striking out five hitters. Jester pitched the last two innings as she struck out three and recorded her second save of the season.

As for the Eagles offense, seven UMW players recorded a multi-hit game as they picked up 13 hits in 26 at-bats (.500).

In the second, Emma Dickson singled home Schieda to get the scoring started. In the third, UMW picked up two more runs on a Laychak two-RBI double to push its lead to 3-0.

Angel then homered in the fourth, driving in Abby Fielder as the Eagles extended their lead to 5-0. Hannah Steele and Shelby Presgrave each drove in runs with singles and then Shakir followed with an RBI single of her own to push the lead to 9-0.

The Eagles are back in action on Wednesday afternoon with a doubleheader against Catholic. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m.
