UMW Softball Falls in Doubleheader with No. 12 Va. Wesleyan

The Mary Washington softball team fell in a Thursday afternoon doubleheader with No. 12 Virginia Wesleyan in Virginia Beach, Va.

Game 1 - Eagles lose - 9-1

Mary Washington would go down by five in the first inning, and was never able to recover as it scored its only run in the fifth inning when Emma Schieda flew out to right field, allowing Aminah Shakir to score.

Shakir and Bridget Laychak picked up the Eagles' lone two hits in the fifth.

Game 2 - Eagles lose - 9-2

Mary Washington came out in Game 2 and quickly scored a pair of runs in the top of the first when Shakir singled home Hannah Steele to open up the scoring. Emily Angel then followed up by singling home Brigid Ward for the second run of the inning.

But then, Virginia Wesleyan struck for three runs on a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-2 lead.

Then, not much else went the way in UMW's favor as Virginia Wesleyan would go on to win, 9-2.

Shakir, Laychak, Angel and Caitlyn Burch would all record hits for the Eagles.

Mary Washington is back in action on Tuesday with a doubleheader scheduled at Stevenson. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
