UMW Softball Sweeps N.C. Wesleyan In Saturday Doubleheader

The Mary Washington softball team (7-5) swept the Saturday doubleheader at N.C. Wesleyan in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Game 1 - Eagles win - 2-1

Samantha Stuart gave the Eagles all they need with a five-inning start, yielding just one run in five innings, while striking out three. Brooklynne James, meanwhile, finished off the final two innings with a pair of shutout frames.

The Eagles scored in the first inning and third inning as Emma Schieda drove home Hannah Steele with an RBI single. In the third, Shelby Presgrave stole home on a double-steal.

Steele and Erica Shoop recorded a pair of base hits for the Eagles in their eight-hit effort.

Game 2 - Eagles win - 8-4

After two scoreless frames, Mary Washington opened the third with an eight-run frame when Shoop singled home Steele. Next, Emily Angel singled home Bridget Laychak. Then, Schieda kept the hit parade rolling with a single that scored Kennedy Darling.

Aminah Shakir then doubled home Abby Fielder and Angel. Then Presgrave doubled home Shakir. Brigid Ward would go onto score on a wild pitch, and finally, the Eagles were done scoring when Steele grounded out to second ona fielder's choice that scored Presgrave.

Caitlyn Burch would go on to pitch five innings for the Eagles, yielding three runs while striking out four. Sydney Jester finished off the afternoon for the Eagles, yielding a run in two innings.

Mary Washington is back in action on Sunday with a doubleheader matchup at Methodist.
