UMW Softball Splits DH with Bridgewater on Wednesday

The Mary Washington softball team split a doubleheader with Bridgewater on Wednesday afternoon in Fredericksburg, Va.

Game 1 - UMW wins - 5-4

Neither Eagles squad could score any runs until Bridgewater came through with a pair of runs in the fourth. Mary Washington would score one in the fifth when Shelby Presgrave doubled home Kennedy Darling

UMW tied it with a doublesteal in the seventh when Emily Mousso took off for second, which allowed Abby Fielder to take home.

Bridgewater scored a pair in the eighth, while UMW walked it off in the ninth this way: Presgrave would reach on an infield single, sending Aminah Shakir to third, then Presgrave took second. Hannah Steele would then reach on an error to the shortstop, scoring both Presgrave and Shakir. And finally, Bridget Laychak doubled home Steele to win it for Mary Washington in the eighth.

Caitlyn Burch pitched all eight innings for UMW, striking out nine and allowed four runs (three earned).

Game 2 - UMW Loses - 7-6

In Game 2, UMW fell behind by two runs in the second before countering with a run in the third and the four in the fourth to take the lead, 5-2.

In the third, Laychak singled home Presgrave, while the fourth inning began with Brigid Ward's bases-cleaing error. Ward then would score on a passed ball.

But Bridgewater would counter with three runs in the sixth to tie it, then another in the seventh to win it.

Mary Washington is back in action this weekend with a matchup at N.C. Wesleyan
