UMW Softball Splits Wednesday Twinbill With Stevenson

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Wednesday doubleheader with Stevenson University, winning the opener, 5-2, before falling in game two, 4-3, in nine innings. The Eagles move to 12-6 on the season.

In game one, the Eagles jumped ahead with a run in the first, as Bridget Laychak singled and scored on a single by Emma Schieda. After the Mustangs took the lead with two in the third, UMW scored four in the fourth. Savannah Jaecks walked with the bases loaded for one run, and Aminah Sakir added a two-run single before Laychak added an RBI single.

Shakir had two hits and two RBI, while Laychak and Schieda each added two hits for the offense. Caitlyn Burch improved to 8-1 with two runs allowed on nine hits in seven innings, with no walks and six strikeouts.

In the second game, Stevenson went ahead with a run in the first, but the Eagles responded with one in the third, as Bridget Lachak rapped an RBI single with the bases loaded.

In the eighth, both teams scored a run, with UMW's coming on Erica Shoop's RBI fielder's choice. In the ninth, Stevenson scored twice, and the Eagles plated one in flling just short, with Nya Lloyd posting a sacrifice fly.

Shelby Presgrave had a single and triple, while Shakir, Schieda, and Nya Lloyd each had two hits. Samantha Stuart took the loss, allowing two earned runs in 7.2 innings with six walks and two strikeouts.

The Eagles will return to action on Saturday, when they visit Washington College at 1:00 p.m.
