UMW Softball Splits with Shenandoah on Wednesday

The University of Mary Washington softball team split its Wednesday doubleheader with visiting Shenandoah University, winning the opener, 2-0, before falling in the second, 10-6. UMW moves to 10-4 on the season.

In the first game, the Eagles plated a pair of runs in the second, as the only runs of the game. The Eagles started the inning with Savannah Jaecks single and Hannah Steele walk. After a sacrifice, Brigid Ward singled to plate Jaecks, and Rayna Lloyd singled to score Steele.

Neither team would dent the scoreboard again, and the Eagles carried the 2-0 score through the seventh.

Erica Shoop led the offense with a pair of singles, while Steele doubled. Junior Caitlyn Burch gained the shutout win, allowing five hits in seven innings, withno walks and 13 strikeouts.

In the second game, UMW fell behind, 7-0, after Shenandoah scored two in the first and five in the third. The Eagles scored two in the third, as Bridget Laychak connected for a two-run homer after a walk to Aminah Shakir.

Kennedy Darling knocked in a run with a single for UMW in the fourth. After SU scored in the fifth, the Eagles rallied for three in the seventh, as Shakir doubled and Laychak singled, before Emma Schieda doubled to drive in Shakir, and Steele followed with a two-run double.

Laychak had a single, double and home run, with two runs and two RBI. Hailee Danneker had a pair of singles.

The Eagles will be back in action on Saturday when they host Gettysburg College in a noon doubleheader.
