UMW Softball Falls to Eastern Mennonite, 9-8 and 8-0

The University of Mary Washington softball team dropped a pair of games against Eastern Mennonite University on Friday afternoon at the Battleground. Games scores were 9-8 and 8-0.

In game one, the Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 in the first inning. Stefannie Asselanis doubled before Malia Rogers drove her in on the next at bat. Emily Briggs doubled to score Rogers, and then scored on a wild pitch.

The Royals responded in the second with two runs, but Zoie Patrick scored on a wild pitch to push the lead to 4-2. EMU scored another run in the third, but a home run from Rogers gave UMW a 5-3 advantage.

The Royals scored six runs in the fifth to jump to a 9-5 lead, but the Eagles responded in the fifth with two runs to narrow the deficit to 9-7. Asselanis scored on a Rogers bunt and Briggs drove in Rogers off a single to center field.

The Eagles scored their final run of the game in the sixth when Asselanis drove in Lindsey Aylor. Erin Stinson took the loss for the Eagles, allowing seven earned runs, and giving up eight hits.

In the second game, both teams went scoreless in the first two innings. EMU jumped on the board in the third to take a 3-0 lead, and would extend the lead to 5-0 at the end of the fifth. The Royals scored three more in the sixth to end the game.

Courtney Merson pitched six innings and gave up six earned runs off 12 hits.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. for a doubleheader at Wesley College.
