UMW Softball Closes Southern Trip With Split on Friday

The University of Mary Washington softball team split a pair of games in Myrtle Beach, SC, on Friday, topping La Roche College, 8-0, before falling to Mount Aloysius College, 4-2.

In the win over La Roche, the Eagles jumped ahead early, scoring twice in the first. With one out, Brandee Adams walked and scored on a triple from Kerry Busby. Emily Nykorchuk hit a sacrifice fly to plate Busby.

Neither team would then push across a run until the fourth inning, as the Eagles erupted for six runs. Hannah Pierson led off with a walk and scored on a passed ball. Kerry Busby reached on a fielder's choice and scored on a Nykourchuk double. Emily Briggs singled, and Erica Falvey provided a two-run single, scoring both runners. After a Hannah Williams single, Hannah Otterman plated two runs with a single, and Williams scored on a passed ball.

Briggs, Falvey, and Otterman each had two hits to lead the Eagle offense. Otterman gained her sixth win of the year, walking none and striking out nine while allowing four hits.

The Eagles then fell to Mount Aloysius, 4-2. The Eagles fell behind, 2-0, after one inning, and 3-0 through three. UMW scored in the fourth as Nykorchuk singled and scored on a Briggs double. After the Mounties added a run in the seventh, UMW scored again in the bottom of the inning, as Hannah Williams singled and scored on an error.

Nykorchuck led the Eagles with two hits, and Briggs added the RBI double. Annie Blaine took the loss for UMW, despite allowing just one earned run on five hits. She walked five and struck out three.

The Eagles will return to action on Thursday, March 14, when they host Mary Baldwin College at 3:00 p.m.
