#18 UMW Men's Tennis Falls to #11 Emory, 5-3, in NCAA Tournament 2nd Round

The 18th ranked University of Mary Washington men's tennis team dropped a 5-3 decision to 11th ranked Emory University on Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division III Tournament at the UMW Indoor Tennis Center. The Eagles close with a 15-6 record.

UMW's Eagles gained the early advantage, taking two of three doubles matches. At three, sophomore Peter Leese and senior Cole Tecce picked up a quick 8-1 victory, before sophomore Rishi Charan Shankar and soph Nick Spera gained a thrilling 8-7 win at two. After falling behind, 3-1, Charan Shankar and Spera took four stright points, and survived in the tiebreaker to give UMW a 2-1 lead turning to singles.

In singles action, Emory knotted the score first, before Tecce gained a 6-0, 6-2 win at four. Emory then took matches at five, two, and one for the clinching point.

UMW's Moses Hutchison and Andrew Watson will advance to the NCAA Championships in Orlando, Fla. on May 26-28 for the national singles and doubles championships. Hutchion will compete in the singles bracket, and team with Watson in doubles.
