UMW Men's Soccer Falls to Washington College, 1-0, in NCAA Tournament 3rd Round

The University of Mary Washington men's soccer team saw its historic season come to an end on Saturday with a 1-0 loss to Washington College in the third round of the NCAA Tournament at the Battleground. The Eagles' season closes with an 18-2-2 record.

The Eagles carried much of the possession during the contest, as the Shoremen employed a strong defensive strategy with all 11 players coming back to mark in the box. Despite an 8-4 edge in shots in the first half, Washington had the most dangerous opportunity of the first half, as their first shot of the contest hit the crossbar.

UMW turned up the pressure offensively in the second, outshooting the guests, 12-1 in the second 45 minutes. But that one shot proved to be the deciding (and only) score of the game, as Washington's Tshazi Kamau worked a perfect give-and-go with Ben Strine to find the net. The Eagles continued to press forward, hitting the post in the waning minutes, and Washington goalie Anthony Pinto made several diving stops.

The Eagles led in shots, 20-5, as well as corner kicks, 8-1. Eagle goalie Freddy Rogers made one save on the day.

The defeat ends a season that saw Mary Washington ranked in the top five all season, including #1 for two weeks, for the first time ever. Washington will advance to the national quarterfinals on Sunday at the Battleground against the winner of Saturday's second contest between Connecticut College and Montclair State University. First kick is set for 1:00 p.m.
